The "automated" mail piece can now be scanned and sorted by the USPS equipment. There is no difference between the barcode used on Standard Mail and the barcode used on 1st Class Mail. In fact, the two are merged together allowing the Automated Standard Mail a faster delivery than non-Automated Standard Mail.
What if you do it yourself?
Your postage charge for the 5.5" X 8.5" postcard is 24.8 to 26.8 cents plus an additional 3 to 4 cents for the stick on label. And, although you are required to sort the pieces down to a 5-digit sortation, you do not receive a 5-digit postage rate as in Automated Standard Mail.
What rate do we get for you with the added barcode?
Automated Standard Mail rates drop to 16.4 to 21.9 cents and no cost for a stick on label since we address directly to the piece. Add to that our few pennies for fulfillment, and you are still below the postage cost you would have endured doing the work yourself. Remember our mission statement on the home page?
"To enter your mail pieces into the USPS with savings on postage that will more than pay for our work."
